Geography Course Outline
Year 9 - Stage 5

1. Content Outline

The aim of the Geography course in year 9 is to stimulate students' enjoyment of and interest in the interaction of the physical and human environments. As Inverell High School students develop geographic knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes they are then able to engage in the community as informed and active citizens.
Over years 9 and 10, students must undertake a two year mandatory 100 hour course in Australian Geography. In year 9 the course will involve the study of 2 focus areas taught throughout the year and totalling 50 hours. The 2 focus areas set down for study are:

NOTE: Tasks 1, 3 and 4 are common tests and will, in total, count towards 20% of the final School Certificate mark and grade. The remaining 80% of the School Certificate mark and grade will be assessed in year10.

3. Outcomes.

Students will work towards the following 10 stage 5 outcomes when studying the two listed year 9 work units.

5.2 Analyses, organises and synthesises geographical information.
5.3 Selects and uses appropriate written, oral and graphic forms to communicate geographical information.
5.4 Selects and applies appropriate geographical tools.
5.5 Demonstrates a sense of place about Australian environments.
5.6 Explains the geographical processes that form and transform Australian Environments.
5.7 Analyses the impact of different perspectives on geographical issues at local, national and global scales.
5.8 Accounts for differences within and between Australian communities.
5.9 Explains Australia's links with other countries and its role in the global community.
5.10 Applies geographical knowledge, understanding and skills with knowledge of civics to demonstrate informed and active citizenship.

4. Helpful Advice.

  • Year 9 is an important year so do not waste your time and that of other students by being disruptive or lazy
  • Plan and research all tasks early and utilise all known resources at home, school and in the community
  • Always hand assessment tasks in on time.
  • Set yourself a high work standard. All work handed in for marking should be the best that you can do.
  • Communicate with your teacher and seek guidance if required. Remember the teacher is always there to help you.
  • Effectively utilise your diaries at all times by bringing them to class every lesson.
  • Be positive and productive in everything that you do.
  • Enjoy the school year by participating in the many school activities offered at Inverell High School and in particular the Social Sciences Department
