Stage 4 Year 8
1. Course Outline
In year 8 students will complete the final stage of the two year mandatory course in geography, which began in year 7. In year 8 students will study the following topics:
- Managing Global Environments ( 24 weeks )
- A review of the world's different environments and why they are there
- Why we need to protect and conserve world environments
- Overview of some of the issues facing environments
- Two case studies - issues in different parts of the world
- Global Citizenship ( 16 weeks )
- What it is to be a citizen of this planet
- How people are linked together by migration, tourism, trade and aid
- How and why people all over the world do not have the same opportunities to obtain all the things they need
- How individuals and groups can fix this problem
2. Outcomes
Students will work towards the following 9 stage 4 outcomes when studying the two above listed topics:
- Identifies and gathers geographical information
- Organise and interpret geographical information
- Use a range of written, oral and graphical forms to communicate geographical information
- Demonstrates a sense of place about environments outside Australia
- Describe the geographical processes that form and change environments
- Identify and discuss different points of view about geographical issues
- Describe the links between different people and their environments
- Explain how all the things you learn in geography help to make you an active and informed citizen
- Describe differences in life opportunities throughout the world in terms of social, cultural, economic and physical environments
3. Assessment
Student assessment will be based on a range of tasks selected from:
- Homework exercises
- Assignments
- Class exercises and tests
- Fieldwork studies
- Formal examinations
- Group work
4. Helpful advice
- Year 8 is an important year so do not waste your time and that of other students by being disruptive or lazy
- Plan and research all tasks early and utilise all known resources at home, school and in the community
- Always hand assessment tasks in on time.
- Set yourself a high work standard. All work handed in for marking should be the best that you can do.
- Communicate with your teacher and seek guidance if required. Remember the teacher is always there to help you.
- Effectively utilise your diaries at all times by bringing them to class every lesson.
- Be positive and productive in everything that you do.
- Enjoy the school year by participating in the many school activities offered at Inverell High School and in particular the Social Sciences Department
