Geography Course Outline
Year 7 - Stage 4
1. Semester Content Outline
The aim of the Geography course in year 7 is to stimulate students' enjoyment of and interest in the interaction of the physical and human environments. As Inverell High School students develop geographic knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes they are then able to engage in the community as informed and active citizens.
Over years 7 and 8, students must undertake a two year mandatory 100 hour course in Global Geography. In year 7 the course will be taught over one semester and total 50 hours. The 2 focus areas set down for study are:-
- Investigating the World (7 weeks)
- The nature of Geography.
- Our world through geographical tools.
- Geographical research.
- World Heritage Sites.
- Global Environments (13 weeks)
- Types of Global environments and their location
- Selection of at least ONE global environment. The global environmental study looks at where the environment is located and why it is there, the processes that operate within the environment ( atmospheric, biotic, geomorphic and hydrologic) and the way humans, including indigenous groups interact with the environment.
- Selection of at least ONE global community and the way it interacts with the selected global environment.
2. Outcomes
Students will work towards the following 8 stage 4 outcomes when studying the two focus areas:
4.1 Identifies and gather geographical information
4.2 Organises and interprets geographical information
4.3 Uses a range of written, oral and graphic forms to communicate geographical information
4.4 Uses a range of geographical tools
4.5 Demonstrates a sense of place about global environments
4.6 Describe the geographical processes that form and transform environments
4.8 Describe the interrelationships between people and environments
4.10 Explains how geographical knowledge, understanding and skills combine with knowledge of civics to contribute to informed citizenship
3. Assessment
Assessment is outcomes based and will include a range of tasks (Example) Bookwork, class/common tests and assignments.
4. Helpful advice
- Year 7 is an important year so do not waste your time and that of other students by being disruptive or lazy
- Plan and research all tasks early and utilise all known resources at home, school and in the community
- Always hand assessment tasks in on time.
- Set yourself a high work standard. All work handed in for marking should be the best that you can do.
- Communicate with your teacher and seek guidance if required. Remember the teacher is always there to help you.
- Effectively utilise your diaries at all times by bringing them to class every lesson.
- Be positive and productive in everything that you do.
- Enjoy the school year by participating in the many school activities offered at Inverell High School and in particular the Social Science Department.
