Science/Agriculture
The Inverell High School Science Faculty is proud to offer a wide range of courses in the areas of Science, Agriculture and Photography; in fact eight different courses are offered to year 11 and 12 students and two in years 7 to 10. We believe that this breadth of opportunity allows all students to find a course which fits their personal talents and interests within the faculty.
The alarming world wide decline in enrolments in tertiary science and technology courses means that careers in these areas will be in high demand in the near future. Keeping students interested and engaged in science will be imperative in the coming decades.
Students are placed in classes on the basis of past results or reports from former schools so that work at an appropriate level can be offered. This ensures that students are able to experience a sense of achievement and are challenged to excel.
Structure and Courses
Stages 4 and 5
Subjects taught in year 7 to year 10 include:
- Junior Science, and
- Junior Agriculture (elective)
All junior Science classes may have up 30 students in each class but average around 27 students. This gives the teachers and students time to develop a rapport and provides the opportunity for one-on-one work, which helps students who are struggling and need greater assistance.
Years 7, 8 and 9 have 7 hours of junior Science a fortnight.
Year 10 has 6 hours of junior Science a fortnight.
Years 8, 9 and 10 have 5 hours of junior Agriculture a fortnight.
Stage 6
Subjects offered in the senior school include:
- Chemistry,
- Biology,
- Physics,
- Senior Science,
- Earth and Environmental Science,
- Photography and Digital Imaging, and
- Agriculture, and
- Primary Industries.
Years 11 and 12 (HSC) courses have 7 hours in each science subject a fortnight.
Achievements
- IHS students have been successful in gaining entry to the Rotary National Youth Science Forum in almost every year since its inception and many students have represented Australia overseas.
- Science and Engineering Challenge Regional champions in 2003,
- Envirothon - State champions 2003,
- Competitors at Brisbane Show and the Northern Schools Steer Competition,
- RACI chemistry,
- Rio Tinto Big Science Competition Science Competition.
In essence, Inverell High School's Science Faculty believes in allowing rural students to have a wide variety of opportunity to achieve.
