Music Department
The Music Department at Inverell High School offers a wide range of courses.
Stage 4
In Years 7 and 8 students undertake study in the mandatory Music courses in which students explore the many faces of Music from around the world.
Year 7 students study a number of topics selected from the following areas. Not all topics are offered each year.
- Rhythmic Hits, in which students explore the world of percussion and rhythm.
- Winds around the World, in which students explore the world of Woodwind and Brasswind and have an initial introduction to pitch. Students also learn to play the Recorder in this unit.
- Vocal Ease, in which students explore the world of singing and continue with their study of pitch.
- Music of Indonesia, in which students explore the exciting musical styles of Bali and Java, bringing together the many skills they have learnt over the previous topics.
- Of Strings and Things, in which students explore the world of stringed instruments and continue their study of pitch. Students are introduced to the guitar or violin in this unit of work.
In Year 8, students continue their study of Music with two units of more concentrated work.
- Bach, Beethoven and the Beatles, in which students explore the relationship between earlier composers and contemporary music. Students engage in their study through research, listening and the performance of various works.
- Rock, Rap and Riffs, in which students study the driving forces of modern popular music and its early history. Students engage in study through research, listening, performance and composition, culminating in the composition and recording of a Rap or pop song in small groups.
Stage 5
Students can elect to continue their study of Music through years 9 and 10, examining a range of topics which represent the best of Australian music in all its many incarnations. In addition to this compulsory area of study, students can elect to study at least four additional topics from a range of possibilities. Topics that have been taught in recent years include:
- Jazz,
- Latin American,
- Film Music,
- Bach and Vivaldi: Music of the Baroque,
- Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven: Music of the Classical Period,
- Contemporary Pop and Rock, and
- Irish Music.
Students may also elect to create an independent research topic in which they explore an aspect of Music that interests them.
In addition to these topics, Year 10 students are expected to define a year long project for their Authentic Assessment review at the end of year 10, in which they develop musical skills in an area in which they already excel or in which they would like to acquire new skills or knowledge. This project is supervised during class, but students are expected to complete the bulk of the work as part of their ongoing personal study routines at home.
Stage 6
Students are able to continue their studies through Years 11 and 12. The NSW Board of Studies offers courses in two areas to cater for differing student interests and needs.
Music Course 1
Course 1 is a course that allows students to pursue studies in at least three topic areas for their HSC. Students are required to complete tasks in the areas of Composition, Music History and Performance, as well as demonstrate skills in the written description of music which they listen to. Typical topic selections include:
- Rock Music,
- Pop Music,
- Jazz,
- Film Music,
- Music of Another Culture,
|
- Music For Small Ensembles,
- An Instrument and its Repertoire,
- Australian Music, and
- Music For Theatre.
|
In all there are 20 topics to choose from, the only limitation being access to sufficient musical resources (recordings and scores) to successfully attempt these topics.
Music Course 2
Course 2 is a more academically oriented course of study, aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in Music as either a teacher, performer, composer or historian. This course requires compulsory studies in History of Western Art Music and Australian Music, as well as elective studies into two other areas. All students complete tasks in Composition, Music History and Performance. In addition, the theoretical studies required to be successful in this course include sight singing, rhythmic and melodic dictation, chord and interval recognition, and melodic harmonisation.
Music Extension
Students who are studying Music Course 2 who are deemed to have sufficient musical skill, determined in consultation with private instrumental teachers, can elect to extend their studies in Music by taking Music Ezxtension. This course allows a student to prepare:
- an extended performance programme, OR
- an extended folio of composition, OR
- an extended analytical study of an existing musical work or collection of works.
