Industrial Arts Department
The Industrial Arts department at Inverell High School offers a broad range of courses to students of all abilities. We focus on project based learning and all courses are structured to cater for all learning styles.
Stage 4
Students from Year 7 to Year 10 can study a wide variety of Industrial Arts subjects in the junior school. Mandatory Technology, formally known as Design and Technology, has a number of contexts that can be completed in the practical workshops.
Year 8 students can elect to study:
- Industrial Technology Wood,
- Industrial Technology Metal, and
- Graphics Technology.
These are introductory courses that give students a taste of what they can expect if they choose to undertake these subjects in Years 9 & 10.
Stage 5
Students in Years 9 & 10 can study Stage 5 courses in:
- Industrial Technology Wood,
- Industrial Technology Metal,
- Industrial Technology Electronics,
- Industrial Technology Automotive, and
- Graphics Technology.
These courses all have a major practical component with relevant associated theory.
Stage 6
Senior students have the opportunity to choose from five different courses of study.
- VET Metals or Construction. This course gives students an exposure to trades based content while gaining Certificate 1, a nationally recognised accreditation. A large component of these couses is a 70 hour mandatory workplacement.
- Design and Technology. In this course students achieve an understanding of design and associated professions while developing a number of projects.
- Industrial Technology Automotive. This course is offered in very few schools. Inverell High has a trained mechanic teaching this course and students gain valuable and real life experience in two & four stroke engines and the automotive industry.
- Engineering Studies is geared towards academic students and concentrates on mechanics and material sciences. Students can gain a firm base for a tertiary education in Engineering through this course.
Staff
The Industrial Arts Faculty has a strong teaching staff that demonstrate a broad array of skills. The Head Teacher, Mr Jason Little and classsroom teachers Mr Jason Lyell, Mr Andrew Thomas, Mr Shaun McAuliffe and Mr Will Gils have backgrounds in building, landscape and mechanics. They draw on these to implement quality teaching programs that maximise opportunities for your children.
