Home Economics Department
The Home Economics Department offers a diverse range of subjects for all students.
Stage 4
In years 7 and 8 students study a mandatory course in Technology. In this course, students have the opportunity to explore and use different mediums to produce projects they have designed. Students in year 8 can also elect 2 subjects from the Home Economics area including Food Technology and Textiles Technology. These are introductory courses and allow students to gain an insight into the material studied in these subjects before entering year 9.
Stage 5
The subjects on offer for year 9 and 10 students include Food Technology, Textiles Technology and Design and Technology. These courses contain practical activities along with a related theory component. They are Board of Studies approved subjects for the School Certificate. Students studying these subjects have the opportunity to be creative, learn new skills and gain valuable knowledge to be used in their future lives.
Stage 6
Senior students are also catered for by the Home Economics Department. They can study any of the following subjects:
Food Technology includes the study of food quality, production, marketing and nutrition. Students will have the opportunity to develop new food products.
Textiles and Design includes the study of fibres, yarns and fabrics, design and the Australian Textiles Industry. Their study includes the production of a major textile project and folio which represents 50% of their HSC results.
Community and Family Studies. This course is as diverse as its name. It involves the study of the family, community, groups, law, and management. Students are to produce an independent research project which involves any of these areas.
Exploring early childhood includes the study of children from conception to school age. Students have the opportunity to visit and run classes at local pre-schools and child care centres.
Hospitality is a vocational education course which boasts dual accreditation for the HSC and TAFE. Students learn skills required for working in the hospitality industry in the area of commercial cookery. In 2006 they will also have the chance to branch out into the Food and Beverage aspect of the industry. Students can achieve a certificate of attainment, certificate 1 or certificate II in this course (TAFE qualification) and sit the HSC exam to utilise their marks for the UAI.
Faculty achievements
The Home Economics faculty have a strong, experienced staff. They are committed to continuously improving their teaching skills, through teaching new courses and updating existing knowledge. Two staff members regularly travel to Sydney to mark HSC papers. These members of staff regularly hold HSC seminars for their students. All members of the faculty see the importance of taking students outside of the school to experience educational activities not available in country regions.
