English
English is the only subject that is mandatory for all students from Year 7-12.
At Inverell High, English is not just reading and writing. Through their study of English, students at Inverell High receive first-rate instruction in public speaking, debating, film appreciation and filmmaking, as well as the more traditional areas of literature analysis. In a recent audit of the provision of English study at Inverell High, those who assessed the school's performance found that the English Faculty:
|
"was highly professional in its commitment and dedication to teaching the mandatory content and to the teaching of students… the English teachers at IHS demonstrate considerable passion and love of their subject." |
In the senior school, students are able to undertake either Advanced or Standard English. Given the number of students who attend Inverell High, we are able to provide distinct text offerings in these courses that allow students to choose a pattern of study that is best for them. In addition to these courses, students who wish to stretch themselves in English are able to study Extension courses.
Extension 1 is a one-unit course that challenges students with quite demanding texts. Extension 1 English students also have the opportunity to study Extension 2 English. This is another one-unit course. It gives those students who wish to develop their creativity within the language the opportunity to do so. Students who undertake Extension 2 English at Inverell High can write short stories or plays or even radio dramas. They can even script and make videos or films. In fact, there are a host of creative ways in which students can apply themselves through this course.
History
History is a mandatory subject for all students from Year 7-10. In the senior school, students are free to select study in Modern History or Ancient History. They can select to do both.
Students may also undertake Extension History in Year 12. This course has been popular at Inverell High. It allows students to undertake study in an area of history that has personal appeal for them.
In 2006, Year 11 and 12 students will travel to Pompeii to undertake a fully guided site study at the ruins of this city, destroyed in AD79 when Mount Vesuvius erupted.
Drama
Drama as a stand-alone elective is offered to students in Years 9-12. Drama is a very popular elective choice at Inverell High, both in the junior and senior school.
In Drama, students develop their theatre skills in a range of areas including performance, set design, lighting, staging, scripting and a range of other areas.
Inverell High presents a major production every two years. The next production will be staged in Term 1, 2006.
Italian
Students in Year 7 undertake a mandatory study of Italian. At the end of Year 7, they may choose Italian as an elective for Years 8-10.
Italian is also available to senior students for study in Years 11-12.
In 2006, students from Years 11 and 12 will travel to Italy to sample Italian culture and develop their language skills.
The language excursion to Italy is only available to students of Inverell High.
Extra-Curricula Activities
In addition to the duties outlines above, English History Faculty teachers lead students in extra-curricula activities including dance, debating and Mock Trials.
